Self-Check-Ins

Regular self-check-ins are essential for maintaining mental wellness. They offer numerous benefits, including:

  • Self-Awareness: Understanding your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
  • Stress Management: Identifying and addressing stressors early.
  • Decision Making: Making informed and balanced choices.
  • Mental Health: Promoting better mental health by addressing negative feelings.
  • Goal Setting: Reflecting on progress and adjusting goals.
  • Empathy and Relationships: Improving empathy and enhancing relationships.

Finding a balance that works for you is key. Regular self-check-ins help you stay grounded and proactive in managing your overall wellness.

  • Daily Check-Ins: Brief daily check-ins can help with emotional awareness and thoughts. This can be as simple as taking a few minutes in the morning or evening to reflect on your day.
  • Weekly Check-Ins: A more in-depth weekly check-in allows you to review your progress toward goals, assess stress levels, and make any necessary adjustments.
  • Monthly Check-Ins: Monthly check-ins are useful for evaluating long-term goals and overall well-being. This is a good time to reflect on significant changes or achievements.
  • As Needed: Sometimes, you might need to check in with yourself more frequently during stressful periods or when facing major decisions. Listen to your body and mind, and adjust the frequency as needed.

An example of a daily check-in may be:

  • What am I grateful for?
  • What are my needs today?
  • How am I feeling?
  • How am I treating myself?
  • What do I want to accomplish today?

Things to remember:

  • Make time for yourself
  • It’s okay to have unproductive days.
  • You deserve love, care, and support.
  • The goodness you see in others is also within you.
  • It’s okay to have days where the only thing you do is survive.
  • Believe in yourself, your journey, and a brighter tomorrow.
  • Accept and embrace your feelings instead of ignoring or hiding them.
  • Listen to your emotions and what they are trying to tell you.

Dear Obie: On the Tightrope

Dear Obie,

Parenting is tough, and sometimes it feels like I’m walking a tightrope when it comes to my child’s emotional well-being.

Signed, On the Tightrope

Dear, On the Tightrope,

Here’s the good news: Your support is everything when it comes to building their confidence and sense of security. You’re their rock, and even the smallest gestures—a smile or a gentle word—can make all the difference.

So, how can you help your child feel more secure and emotionally confident? Here are a few tips:

Validate Their Feelings: When your child is struggling, acknowledge their feelings. If they’re homesick or anxious, let them know it’s okay to feel that way. Something like, “I know this is tough, but you’re safe, and we’ve got this together” can go a long way.

Create a Routine: Kids thrive on predictability, so a comforting routine can make them feel more secure. Whether it’s a bedtime story or a fun after-school activity, they’ll appreciate knowing what’s next.

Encourage Friendships: Help your child build connections by organizing playdates or encouraging group activities. A sense of belonging can boost their confidence.

Comforting Rituals: A special object or secret handshake can offer comfort during separations and make them feel safe.

You’re doing an amazing job! Keep up the hugs, words of encouragement, and little routines. They’re making a big impact! 💖

What is Depression?

Depression isn’t just about feeling sad—it’s a real and often overwhelming struggle that can affect every part of life. It can make you feel empty, hopeless, or disconnected from things you once loved. And the hardest part? These feelings don’t just go away overnight. They can linger for weeks or even months, making even the simplest tasks feel exhausting.

Everyone experiences depression differently. Some people feel drained of energy, have trouble focusing, or struggle with sleep—either getting too much or barely any at all. Appetite can change too, and there might even be physical symptoms like constant aches, pains, or fatigue. And sometimes, there’s no obvious reason behind it—it just happens.

But here’s something important to remember: Depression isn’t a sign of weakness, and it’s not something you can just “snap out of.” It’s a real medical condition, and there is help available.

The good news is that depression is treatable. Therapy, lifestyle changes like exercise or mindfulness, and sometimes medication can all play a role in recovery. The first step—talking about it—can be the hardest, but it’s also the beginning of healing.

If you or someone you know is struggling, know that you’re not alone. Support is out there, and with the right help, things can get better.

Dear Obie: Tired of the Struggle

Dear Obie,

I want to connect better with my kid, but the usual discipline methods just lead to more frustration. How can I encourage good behavior without constant battles?

Signed, Tired of the Struggle

Dear Tired of the Struggle,

I hear you! Yelling, time-outs, and taking things away often just make things worse. But here’s the good news—focusing on what kids do right instead of what they do wrong can totally change the game.

Why Positive Reinforcement Works:

🚀 Punishments can make kids shut down (or push back even harder).
✨ Catching them doing something good builds confidence and encourages more of it.
💡 Feeling seen and appreciated makes kids more likely to listen.

Simple Swaps That Work:

✅ Instead of “Stop whining!” try “Thanks for using your calm voice!”
🤝 Swap “Clean your room or no TV!” with “When your room is tidy, we can watch together!”
🎉 Celebrate small wins—stickers, high-fives, extra playtime all go a long way!

Making kids feel good about good choices helps everyone win. Try it out and see how it changes things! Have you tried this? Drop your best tips in the comments! 💬💖

What is Anxiety?

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural response to stress. It’s that feeling of worry, nervousness, or fear you might get before a test, when meeting new people, or in unfamiliar situations. This type of anxiety can be helpful—it keeps us alert and helps us prepare.

But for some people, anxiety doesn’t go away, even when there’s no clear reason to feel anxious. This can affect daily life. People might feel restless, have a hard time sleeping, or notice physical symptoms like a fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, or upset stomach. It can also lead to racing thoughts or feeling “on edge” much of the time.

Understanding anxiety is the first step toward managing it. You’re not alone, and support is available.

There are different types of anxiety, like generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety. Each one has its own signs, but they all involve excessive worry or fear that’s hard to control.

Managing anxiety takes time, but it’s possible. Techniques like deep breathing, regular exercise, maintaining a routine, and talking to a trusted person can help. Many people also find counseling helpful to explore the root of their anxiety and learn practical coping tools.

If anxiety is interfering with your life, know that you’re not alone. Understanding anxiety is the first step toward managing it. Support is available, and healing is possible.

Dear Obie: Always Negotiating

Dear Obie,

I feel like I’m constantly negotiating with my kids. I say, “If you do this, then you get that.” It always seems to turn into a battle. How do I get them to cooperate without the constant pushback?

Signed,
Always Negotiating

Obie the OBHAW Coping Coach

Dear Always Negotiating,

I hear you! Parenting can feel like an endless round of debates. But here’s a simple tweak that can work wonders: swap “if-then” for “when-then.”

“If-then” statements often sound like threats (“If you don’t clean your room, no TV!”), while “when-then” statements set clear expectations in a way that feels positive and motivating. It’s a game-changer!

Try These Instead:
✨ “When you clean your room, then you can watch your favorite show.”
🍽️ “When you help set the table, then we can enjoy our meal together.”
🎮 “When you finish your homework, then you can play your favorite game.”
🛏️ “When you get ready for bed, then we can enjoy a bedtime story together.”

This small shift creates a smoother, more cooperative dynamic. Try it out and see the difference!
