What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural response to stress. It’s that feeling of worry, nervousness, or fear you might get before a test, when meeting new people, or in unfamiliar situations. This type of anxiety can be helpful—it keeps us alert and helps us prepare.

But for some people, anxiety doesn’t go away, even when there’s no clear reason to feel anxious. This can affect daily life. People might feel restless, have a hard time sleeping, or notice physical symptoms like a fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, or upset stomach. It can also lead to racing thoughts or feeling “on edge” much of the time.

Understanding anxiety is the first step toward managing it. You’re not alone, and support is available.

There are different types of anxiety, like generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety. Each one has its own signs, but they all involve excessive worry or fear that’s hard to control.

Managing anxiety takes time, but it’s possible. Techniques like deep breathing, regular exercise, maintaining a routine, and talking to a trusted person can help. Many people also find counseling helpful to explore the root of their anxiety and learn practical coping tools.

If anxiety is interfering with your life, know that you’re not alone. Understanding anxiety is the first step toward managing it. Support is available, and healing is possible.
